Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Many people are reluctant to give up what they have: homes, property, money, family, where they live, etc. These are the treasures which they do not want to discard. But that may be destroyed or lost. Moreover, all these earthly things will lose the day when we leave this world and will go to other hands, might even fall into the hands of our enemies. The only permanent treasures are those deposited in heaven, which joining us for eternity.
I remember my mother had two great obsessions in her life: to finish rebuilding her house and building a mausoleum for the whole family in a cemetery in my hometown. So great was his desire for both things that she saved every penny she received in order to conform to both dreams. Her home became an impenetrable fortress and she wanted to live there alone despite her advanced age. So was locked until the air entered with difficulty. One day her neighbors found her collapsed on the house and took her to a hospital where she died several days later. The result was that her remains could not be buried in her mausoleum because neither my brother nor I found it and her beloved house was left to his death at the mercy of thieves whom she so feared, who finished vandalized it, forcing us to sell it early for a fraction of its true value.
I know that the case of my mother is not unique because many people live jealously guarding material things, their loved treasures. Sometimes, these treasures are stolen by thieves, sometimes burned in fire, break in an earthquake, are washed away in a flood or wind in a storm, or simply are damaged as a result of aging. It is also possible that these treasures lose their value by the fall in the stock or real estate market, the depreciation of the national currency or simply by technological change.
In this world there is no secure investment, if available, would profit us nothing when we die because everything stays here and we cannot take any of that into eternity. However, the heavenly treasures are eternal proof of theft, fire, earthquakes, hurricanes, frost, floods, falling markets, changes in technology and other calamities.
Upon the death of my mother, the Lord gave me comfort and He said that she had taken a great treasure: eternal life. He gave me peace because now she is resting in the best hands and living in a safe and perfect heavenly home. Let do what the Lord Jesus tells us and put our heart in heavenly treasures which are eternal, which are safe and immovable because everything in this world is perishable and uncertain. God bless you.
