You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus says we are the salt of the earth; therefore, we spice up this planet. We are the quintessential seasoning all situations that people face. He also said that we are the light of the world. We must shine brightly instead of being overshadowed by the darkness that dominates the world today.
The children of God do not have to always ride defensively and allowed to be bypassed by using the name of Jesus, while things that God hates are ennobled by society. We must come forward and serve as lighthouse, guide, compass, GPS to a world that increasingly is riddled with sin.
The Lord said that we are the salt of the earth. He did not say that we are sugar of the earth. Therefore, we are not called to be diplomats be liked around the world. Christians are called to preach the truth of Christ and not to sugarcoat saying what society qualifies as politically correct. Sometimes the truth will offend some, but preferably it so instead of saying something nice to their ears that leads to perdition.
As the salt of the earth and light of the world we are called to carry out the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations. It is our responsibility as children of God, to be fishers of men and women who are dead in trespasses and sins. We turn to be those workers who collect the harvest, lead wandering sheep without a shepherd and rescue lost. It is our duty as Christians preaching good news to the poor, healing the brokenhearted, proclaiming liberty to captives, sighting to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. For that we have been anointed, trained and commissioned.
Those are the good works that glorify our Father who is in heaven mentioned Matthew 5:16. The Christian must not be a person who is sitting on the chair of a church listening to a sermon. Nor is it to be just looking at our particular needs and asking others to pray for us. There are many people out there who could die without knowing the Truth and go to hell. We should have compassion for those who have not been exposed to the Word of God and know that Jesus Christ died for them too.
Be the salt of the earth and light of the world summons us to be transmitters of the gospel to every creature. We must be diligent with our mission in the world. We are ambassadors for Christ, and as such we have to be worthy representatives of the Lord. God bless you.
