And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
The first Bible verse I memorized was John 8:32. This verse I learned from my childhood, many years before I had the opportunity to know the truth that set me free. The reason memorize this Scripture is that it appears in the national emblem of the country where I was born, so, in my time, every school child was required to learn it.
God wants to be known to humanity and to leave no doubt of his desire, it is written in Jeremiah 9:23-24: Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.
You cannot meet anyone without closely share with that someone. Husband and wife know each other because they share their lives and are one flesh. Similarly, the mother knows her children because she had in her womb for 9 months, nursed and cared in childhood and shared his moments of joy and sadness. Also, we know our close friends, with whom we exchange our deepest secrets. Meet in the privacy means to be one and God’s desire is there unity among us and with us.
Knowledge of the truth of John 8:32 and knowledge and understanding of God expressed in Jeremiah 9:23-24 necessarily begins with knowledge and intimacy with Jesus. It is because Jesus, the one who can lead us to the true knowledge of God, as John 1:18 says: No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son — the One who is at the Father’s side — He has revealed Him.
But when Jesus tells us in John 8:32 that we will know the truth which will set us free, to know he was referring to Himself, for in John 14:6 states: Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus is the truth that we should know, He is the truth that makes us free, and He is who guides us to know the Father, who shows us what and who conveys His great love.
