The Lord is Our Helper

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

Hebrews 13:5-6

In today’s world, most people tend to be more concerned about having more each day. The consumer society in which we live tempts us to fight to acquire what is fashionable, the latest technology and try to keep certain status. Very few seem to be motivated to what Hebrews 13:5: Let your conduct be without covetousness. But every day more strengthens the tendency to be attached to material things and money.

I think the epitome of covetousness in our society of XXI century is called Black Friday. The fourth Friday of November, just after the celebration of Thanksgiving Day, stores in large shopping malls announce huge discounts on sales that attract millions of people. At first stores opened early Friday; but many people were lining up overnight. Currently, some shops open from the early hours of Thursday night, which makes people forget to thank God and share with their family Thanksgiving dinner for shopping.

How few are happy with what they have now! Rather, many are awaiting the release of the new iPhone model to be the first to buy it. Everything, including relations have become disposable objects. It’s a real shame to see the glass half empty rather than half full. Current worst tendency is to ignore those who have next preferring introduce their smartphone or tablet to find out what happens thousands of miles away.

All the covetousness and discontent wrapping us today is the result of wanting to do everything just counting our own strength. We reject the help that God wants to give us because we exclude Him from our decisions. Then, when things do not go as we thought, we have the effrontery to get angry with God because He did not help us to indulge our desires, without taking into account that we do not ask His opinion previously.

God will not forsake us or leave us alone. He wants to be our helper and our main defender of both what happens in the visible world as the machinations of the prince of darkness. When we put all our trust in our Heavenly Father, we always go the right way, regardless of if they seem it or not.

Let us stop paying more attention to the things of the world that are here today and gone tomorrow. Let God be our north, our support, our helper, which is in accordance with plans and purposes He has for our lives. Only then can we live confident. God bless you.
