This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
The best demonstration of the accuracy of what it says Ephesians 4:17-19 is the same society in which we live. We cannot cover the sun with a finger; the world today is riddled with sin. And supposedly brightest human minds are more clouded than the sky on a stormy day. Only then is it that today many live outside the life of God, that sensitivity is lost and that is the norm working all uncleanness greediness.
Louis Berkof Dutch theologian (1873-1957) once said: “Sin has darkened in understanding the human being and exerts a bad influence on their mental life.” More recently, the German evangelist Reinhard Bonnke said: “Sin is a dark cloud that neutralizes every good gift in our nature, a destructive trend.” Both agree completely what Paul stated in his letter to the Ephesians.
Let us analyze step by step what Ephesians 4:17-19 tells us to meditate on what the sin does of those who practice it. First it says that Gentiles walk in the futility of their mind. Futility or vanity is the excessive belief in one’s abilities or attraction caused to others. It is a kind of arrogance, conceit, an exaggerated expression of pride. The classical Christian theology believes that vanity is to deposit confidence in an exclusive manner in worldly things, what makes a man does not need God.
The second thing that says Ephesians 4:17-19 is having their understanding darkened. Darkening means dark, filled with darkness. That means that the sinner’s mind does not reason clearly. It’s like a computer when it is turning into a loop. The bad thing, unlike the computer, you cannot restart a person treading three keys. Or you may not be running an antivirus program with a human being.
Third read, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them. It is very interesting to note that those who live more alienated from the life of God are precisely those that are considered individuals with high IQ. Call ignorant to most atheistic scientists would be disrespecting, from their point of view. Well, Paul says that in these people there is ignorance. And, for my part, if one reads and hears and feels offended, I remind you that God does exist and they already have offended Him first denying His existence, so I have no reason to apologize if they offended.
Paul also speaks of the hardness of heart polluted by sin and loss of feeling, which has given him to commit lewdness and every kind of impurity with greediness. It is regrettable that many videos are shared every day on social networks which are taken with Smartphone’s’ camera. In many situations such as fights and accidents, where who took the video, was an insensitive witness who preferred to keep the fact before intervening to help look. If our world is as it is it is a result of sin twisted minds that devise all kinds of evil. It is time to change course and turn to the Lord. God bless you.
