Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
2 John 1:9
The apostle John gives a serious warning to anyone who claims to be Christian. In 2 John 1:9 Scripture warns us of the danger of getting lost by not persevering in the doctrine of Christ. Persevere mean not abandoning the race midway, it is not divert to alternative routes or deny Christ embracing strange doctrines. As John wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, who is lost and does not continue not have God; but who perseveres has the Father and the Son.
In the natural it is quite easy to get lost today. Despite modern advances such as GPS, not always we arrived at our destination, but sometimes, the same apparatus distracts from the road. I remember on one occasion I went with my family to a special service in Lakeland, a city in central Florida. Knowing that the service would end quite late and the trip back home was almost 4 hour drive, we decided that we would stay near the place of service.
Some friends lent us a house they owned in Orlando, just a half hour from Lakeland. As I don’t know very well that part of the state of Florida, I borrowed a GPS to my pastor. The service ended after midnight. Upon leaving, we stopped for a bite at a nearby restaurant and then place the address of the house that gave us into the GPS with the intention of getting there and rest to return home afterwards.
Unfortunately, the global positioning satellite system did not help us at all. We were circling for several hours and never took us to our destination. We got lost and in the end, tired of not finding our way, we decided to return to our home. I sleep very rarely when I’m in a car, but this was one of those few times. The bad part is that I was who drove the car. I woke up when the tires made a strange noise in the area of highway safety. Finally we got home last 7 in the morning.
Spiritually we can also divert the road to the heavenly abode. John 14:6 says: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” When we take our eyes off Jesus, we will go astray because He is the only path that leads to the Father. Any other religion which guides us to give somebody else a higher priority over Christ will go us away from God, whom we will not have in us and with us.
It is not right to believe as my grandmother taught me or what I learned in my school since childhood. They could be seemingly pious customs; but if Jesus Christ is not the center, those things make us astray. Nor is it to do more “human” the gospel or to adapt them to current thinking. The guide for excellence in our relationship with God is the Bible and it clearly tells us that Christ’s doctrine is correct.
Avoid getting lost with religious practices that remove role to Jesus Christ. He is the only mediator between God and men. And I did not invent that’s but what the Bible states in 1 Timothy 2:5-6: For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Persevering in the doctrine of Christ we will always have the Father and the Son and will remain temple of the Holy Spirit. God bless you.
