Born of Water and the Spirit

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

John 3:5

When Jesus told the Pharisee Nicodemus that it was necessary to be born again to see and enter the Kingdom of God, the idea that had Nicodemus was a carnal birth. In John 3:5, Jesus made clear to him that the new birth comes from the water and the Spirit. And have no doubt that, in John 3:6 goes on to say to him: That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. If we wish to become children of God, we must be born again by the nature of our Heavenly Father, who is Spirit.

As a chemical engineer, I know the great importance of water as a substance. Water can be found on Earth in all three states of matter. Chemically, water has two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to an oxygen atom. The water is listed as the universal solvent and is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. The water constantly circulates in a cycle of evaporation, precipitation, and displacement to the sea.

Why should we be born of water? According to Scripture, water is the source of everything. In 2 Peter 3:5 says: For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water. That old time refers Pedro, you can understand, in the beginning, at the origin of creation, God used water as raw material to create the heavens and the earth. In the new birth, we must be born under the original plan of God.

During the transit of the people of Israel through the desert to the Promised Land, God instructed him to use the water for purification. See for example, in Numbers 19:9-21, Numbers 31:23 and Leviticus 15:13. Born of water means have been purified and cleansed from all sin. That can only be done through the living water, Jesus Christ. As John 4:10 says: Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

This living water, the raw material that was used to create everything that exists; it proceeds from the very throne of God. Revelation 22:1 says: And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Water birth is born of the same origin of God and of the Lamb, His beloved Son Jesus, who gave His precious life for our redemption.

The baptism of Jesus is the best biblical example of what it means to be born of water and the Spirit. In Matthew 3:16-17 we read: When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

To enter the kingdom of heaven we must first be born again of water and the Spirit. The water of life that gives us Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. Then the Spirit of God comes to dwell in us. In this way, we become children of God acquiring His spiritual DNA. As children, we are entitled to inherit in the house of our Heavenly Father. As heirs we dwell with Him for all eternity. Do not waste any more time and seek to be part of the kingdom of heaven. God bless you.
