But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the Day of Judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
There are people who speak and act in such a way as if they were above all things. Such people are even able to challenge the authority of God and His Word trying to impose their own criteria. Matthew 12:36-37 tells us to give account for what we say. According to Scripture, we will be justified or condemned according to our words. No doubt that in our tongue is also the power of eternal life or eternal death.
It is very likely that many people are familiar with a message about celebrities swearing that had a tragic fate. One was John Lennon, famous member of the British band The Beatles. During an interview with journalist Maureen Cleave of Evening Standard, he said: “Christianity will go. It will vanish and reduce its size (…) We are more popular than Jesus now; I do not know which will go first, if rock and roll or Christianity.” Christianity continues, the Beatles group disappeared in 1969 and Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980.
I will not present here the other stories because, except that of Lennon, I have no evidence of its accuracy. However, there is another story that is confirmed. On June 2, 2010, the late President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez cursed Israel for the attack on the Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Chavez said: “I take this opportunity to condemn once again from the bottom of my heart and my gut the State of Israel. Damn you State of Israel! Damn you!” On June 8, 2011, Chavez himself announced he had cancer in the pelvic region of his body.
I know that there will be people who can tick me as religious fanatic because I have presented these two stories. Some may say that how could God be so vengeful. Others will say that is pure coincidence because God is love and His mercy and forgiveness would prevent him from doing such things. God is as He is and not as we think He is. And it is written in Matthew 24:35: Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. The Word of God is full meet from Genesis to Revelation.
Therefore, we would not be judging in advance whether the examples we have presented today are included as proof that Matthew 12:36-37 is true. I remember who listens to me or I read that I did not write the Bible. But in Genesis 12:3 it says: I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Chavez curse words toward Israel were a boomerang returning towards him.
And as we will give account of every idle word spoken by us in the day of judgment, we should think carefully before opening our mouth. Those idle words can condemn us to eternal torment. But the Lord also said: For by your words you will be justified. So we utter the words that will justify us before God, the first thing is to express repentance for our sins and then confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord. Accept the gift of salvation that gives eternal life. God bless you.
