And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 3:23
In 1 John 3:23 we find the essence of the New Covenant between God and humanity. In the same way that in the Old Covenant, God gave His Law, the Ten Commandments to His people through Moses, in the New, God has also revealed His commandment. And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Therefore, believing in Jesus’ name is not simply a suggestion, but a commandment.
Among the definitions of the word believe they are: take for certain one thing that is not proven or demonstrated; have confidence in something; have faith in the tenets of a religion; consider that a person is telling the truth; have some opinion about something. When John talks about believing in the name of Jesus is referring to have faith and trust in Him. It is obvious that our Lord always tells the truth, therefore, our faith and trust in Him are supported by His Word, which it is true.
A commandment is not a suggestion or a simple request but a given order with power and authority. Naturally, not everyone abides by the orders and some even boast that violate the rules is their favorite sport. But the truth is that anyone who violates the established rules will suffer the consequences if any violated. If you go down a road with a speed limit of 65 miles per hour and decide to drive your car to 75 because the adrenaline you certainly could be fined if a highway patrolman stops you.
On the commandment to believe in the name of Jesus Christ, remember the words Peter said in Acts 4:11-12: This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Ignoring the commandment to believe in the name of Jesus leads to the loss of salvation. We cannot save ourselves by believing in a name different to Jesus Christ. And let’s be clear, this rule has no exception.
The apostle Paul speaks about it in Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The name of Jesus is a name unparalleled and is above every name. No discussion about the Bible is very clear on this subject.
You may think that believing in the names of saints, virgins and religious leaders could help you better achieve the favor of God. And maybe your thinking is due because all your life someone has taught you this way. But stop and consider if the origin of such beliefs has been on God’s truth and His written Word, the Bible. I can assure you that it is not but come from human philosophies, totally contrary to Scripture. Therefore, keep the commandment given in 1 John 3:23, which guarantees you will not lose because you will have eternal life, God will get justice and not be ashamed, conquer the world, be a child of God and be sealed the Holy Spirit. God bless you.
