We Don’t Know if We’ll Have Tomorrow

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

James 4:13-14

Many people live as if they will remain forever on this earth. They live accumulating goods and struggling to maintain status or social position without taking into account the fragility of human existence. Every day there are those who lie down to rest and don’t have a chance to see the light of day. And worst of all is that none of us know when we will be time to leave. But life can end in the blink of an eye.

Recently, a small plane landed on a home in Palm Beach County Florida. The plane caught fire on impact and the pilot died instantly. Inside the house a girl was sleeping to whom death surprised when she least expected. The girl was a college student who the day before to the accident had posted on her Facebook page a picture of herself and a plane where she said she wanted to go away on a plane. She really did not wake living her dream and certainly took a plane to eternity.

I have known many cases similar to this girl. Some of them have touched me very closely because the people involved were somehow closely related to me. One such case was that of one of my classmates at school. She was one of the smartest of the class; but when we graduated, instead of going to college, she first married and raised a family.

After her children were born, my classmate decided to study in college and she did very well. Being a few months after graduating, she was one morning with some classmates because they were doing academic work. A truck went against the traffic and hit the car in which my friend and her traveling companions. She was the only victim of the accident and there she saw truncated her dreams of graduation, practicing her career and to see her children grow.

My mother always said that we walk alive but stinking dead. What she meant was that die at any moment is a possibility with which every human being lives. It seems ironic; but to die just we need to be alive. Therefore it is very important to live this short life with a mindset of eternity. And also the uncertainty of not knowing the time of our departure, there is the certainty that something awaits us from the moment of our death. That something may be even more terrible than death it or it can be something beautiful and lasting.

Many human philosophies try to explain what happens beyond on their own way. Some say we will reincarnate others everything ends at death, others will rise and reign on earth and others admit that there are several different places to go; but nobody has security where he or she is going. However, God’s Word states very clearly what will happen to every human being is: we will be saved or condemned.

And we do not know when we leave, but we can choose our destination on time. Repent of our sins and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is our only guarantee of eternal life. Do it today! Tomorrow could be too late. God bless you.
