For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4
How accurate prophecy of Paul in 2 Timothy 4:3-4! At this time in which we live, we are seeing the full and complete compliance with it. There is no doubt that many churches no longer endure sound doctrine. It is also true that many people are itching to hear what they think it should be convenient for them. People massively go to temples which are far from truth. By slothfulness not search the Scriptures, many people are tempted to listen to the fables of the false teachers.
Today there is much adulterated preaching that is reaching people. And I do not mean anything to religious groups that use parallel extra-biblical sources to support their doctrines, such as the Catholic Catechism, the Book of Mormon or the Watchtower Jehovah’s Witnesses. All these writings often come in clear contradiction to the Word of God and their deviations are so obvious that those who remain blind within those religious groups it is because of indoctrination to which they have been subjected for years, and they are just unable to see the truth.
There are worse things in churches all those who call themselves Christian; but which very subtly they preach contrary to sound doctrine. Whoever wants to avoid falling into a false gospel must be very diligent and sieve everything you hear through the filter of the Bible. Symptoms to detect churches are: legalism, marked emphasis on money, spiritual warfare, inner healing, excessive emphasis on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, abuse of prophecy, mysticism, immunity criticism, perfectionism, liberation theology, etc.
Some of the issues I have mentioned seem to be good or biblically acceptable; but much eye with that, all is not necessarily true. For example, something that is said about spiritual warfare is not biblical. Some preachers, knowingly or ignorantly attributed to a demon responsibility for the works of the flesh. In addition some people peddle with generational curses. As for inner healing, it is widely used syncretism with pagan techniques, which is totally unbiblical.
I will mention two thoughts of American preacher Aiden Wilson Tozer (1897-1963). The first is: “Evangelism that draws parallels friendly between the ways of God and men, is a false gospel as to the Bible and cruel to the souls of the listeners.” And the second says: “In many churches, Christianity has been diluted until the solution is so weak that if it were poison would not harm anyone, and if medicine does not cure anybody.”
If you want to know if you visit the church adheres to sound doctrine, ask the following questions: Is there in the church an absolute commitment to the supremacy of Scripture? Does it teach that church in a clear and definitive total inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible? Does the pastor believe Scripture and Scripture alone must arbitrate in all matters of faith and practice? Does it teach the church clearly that salvation is based solely on the unmerited grace of God? Does it teach that salvation is by grace alone through faith in Christ? Does the church adhere fully to the central doctrines of historic Christianity? If the answer to any of these questions is no, flee there. God bless you.
