Rest for the Soul

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Matthew 11:29-30

At the time in which we live, the word rest seems to be a dying breed. Life is growing rapidly and people demand immediate results. When these results are not obtained according to expectations, people get frustrated and come stress and disappointment. In Matthew 11:29-30, our Lord, as the best teacher, he gives us a lesson to learn to rest in Him and let us carry on the yoke of social demands and change it for His.

In the world there are people who are workaholics and who do not spare them time to devote to their family, much less to seek God. If you asked me how I know this, I must tell you in all honesty that for many years I was one of them. Given my melancholy temperament, I’ve been a perfectionist. That brings me to give the extra mile so that my work was carried out above expectations. To achieve being satisfied with what I did, many times I spent much more time than it was supposed in my schedule.

Usually I left home at 6am for my work and got home at 9 at night. But instead of resting, I took work home and I went to bed late night at 11. In short, I slept only 5 hours from Monday to Friday. One night when I came home from work, my daughter asked me the following question: “Daddy, how much do you make in a day?” I said, “Why do you ask that question, daughter?” And she answered me, “I want to know to pay you a day of your time to be with me.”

My daughter’s words were as many arrows pierced my body from my chest to my back. I realized that, by providing worry about the house, I had neglected my family. Of course, I continued justifying my behavior with that sacrifice was necessary so that my family had covered their needs. At the end, my mistake led to the destruction of my home and my children withdrawal from much affect my relationship with them. That mistake I paid with tears for long.

For several years, my soul had no rest; it was not until I had my personal encounter with the Lord that finally my soul found it. Then I realized myself and experience what it says Matthew 11:29-30: Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Today I voluntarily take the easy yoke and the light burden of Jesus Christ, and indeed no regrets.

You won’t find rest for your soul earning more money. Your income may increase; but perhaps the weight of your duties as well, so dissatisfaction will persist. Achieving your goals will not give rest to your soul because you’ll replace them for other more ambitious. The only way to rest your soul is by replacing your yoke for that of Christ. We learn from His meekness and humility of heart to find rest. To do more, all you achieve is more tiring. Let’s be relying on our own strength and rest in Him. God bless you.
