Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Water is the most important chemical in the universe. This compound composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom is essential for the life of all beings that inhabit our planet. Neither plants nor animals nor humans could survive long without water. One of the main manifestations of the lack of water is thirst. Our body gives us the sign that we need water through thirst. In John 4:13-14, the Lord promises to give us water from a source that will remove our thirst forever.
If we take the argument, which says John 4:13-14 seems impossible that happen. How can you stop being thirsty? For human beings this is impossible because if we drink water, we calmed down when thirst; but after a while we will be thirsty. But it is necessary that we realize whose words said John 4:13-14, and that person is none other than the one whom John 1:1-3 calls the Word: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
Based on the writing at the beginning of the gospel of John, Jesus is God, therefore, He has all the attributes of divinity and His power allows Him to give us this water that will remove us forever thirst. In Revelation 21:6, the Lord Himself speaks saying: And He said to me, “It is done![a] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. The water of eternal life that Jesus offers is free, it is not something for which we will pay another price than the approach Him with faith, believing in Him and our thirst will be quenched forever.
Given that this water Jesus offers us is able to take away our thirst forever and give us eternal life; its value must be incalculable. But where does this water come from? The answer is found in Revelation 22:1: And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Water of life that comes from God Himself and, certainly, its value is incalculable; it cost the whole blood of the Lamb.
The best known verse of the Bible, John 3:16, gives us a light on what or who is the living water that removes thirst forever us: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. The source of water welling up to eternal life is Jesus Himself, because He and He alone is the source of salvation, the source of our justification by faith, which we receive for free.
Every human being has turned away from God and has built their own way to quench their thirst. It is written in Jeremiah 2:13: For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water. Let’s leave behind the broken cisterns and drink the water of life that gives us Jesus Christ. God bless you.
