Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
I remember that in my childhood, my classmates used a lot of expression that you should be where the general sees you. What they meant by this was that the best place was to be close to the boss, close to the leader. In John 17:24, our commander in chief, our leader and Lord Jesus Christ prays to His Father that His disciples are in the same place where He is. The Lord acknowledges in John 17:24 that this place exhibits the glory that God the Father has given to His Son, who also wants to make partakers of His glory to those who have believed in Him.
Where is Jesus now? Scripture often affirms that He is in heaven at the right hand of the Father. Mark 16:19 says, So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. Stephen, the first Christian martyr when he was stoned to death, as Acts 7:55-56 says, But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
If Jesus is in heaven at the right hand of God the Father and He wants us to be where He is and to see His glory, it is obvious that this is the place where we will one day be. Members of a certain religion say that only the apostles and a select group will be in heaven while the rest of the believers will dwell in a new land where Jesus will establish His Kingdom. But what John 17:24 says is part of the prayer of Jesus understood throughout this chapter and which includes what John 17:20 says: I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word.
Of course, all of us who have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ will be where He is, with our Heavenly Father. That promise of the Lord is written in John 14:2-3: In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. The Lord does not lie, one of the purposes of His ascension to heaven was to prepare us to dwell in the house of His Father.
Chapters 21 and 22 of the Book of Revelation describe how the dwelling place our Lord has prepared for us. Revelation 21:10-11 says, And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
And he goes on to say Revelation 21:18, The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. Later Revelation 21:22-23 says, But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. The splendor of the New Jerusalem has no comparison with anything in this world. There we will be with the Lord forever and ever. God bless you.
