Heirs, not Slaves

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Galatians 4:6-7

Before anyone has known Jesus Christ, he has undoubtedly led a life of sin. Sin puts us in bondage, although as we walk through life doing what we feel like we are free. The only true freedom is given by Jesus Christ; but there are people who, when converted to Christ, act as though they were still slaves. If John 1:12 says that whoever receives Jesus Christ acquires the power to be made son of God, from then on our position must be that of an heir of the Kingdom of our Father, not that of a slave.

In Jesus Christ was fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners. Christ, the Anointed, the Messiah came to give us freedom from our bondage to sin and from the curse of the Law. Those are the good news of the Gospel that He preached and invites us to preach to those who have believed in Him.

Despite this good news, there are many who give their lives to the Lord and seem as if they continue in slavery. They have come out of being slaves to sin and then become slaves to religion. They are forced to follow human ordinances and customs that are not always biblical, which bind them. If Jesus Christ came to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the prisoners opening the prison, then He has not come to impose new chains of slavery. His good news is a true declaration of freedom.

The Lord’s declaration of freedom does not include our submission to strict religious norms. Jesus came to restore our relationship with God, a relationship in which He is our Father and each one of us is His son or His daughter. Galatians 3:26 says, For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Putting our faith in Jesus Christ we become children of God. As children, we can call God “Abba, Father!” Which is like saying “Dad or Daddy” in a loving way.

The children approach their father with confidence and without fear because they know that their father loves them. And what is of the father, someday will be of the son. That’s called inheritance. As children of God, we are also His heirs and the means to achieve both our status as children and the inheritance is through Christ. Receiving Jesus Christ in our hearts we are made children of God, we are freed from the slavery of sin and, as children, we become heirs of the Kingdom of our Beloved Heavenly Father.

Receive Christ today and breathe the freedom that has been given to you. Remember what 2 Corinthians 3:17 says: For the Lord is the Spirit; Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. You are no longer a slave, you are free from sin, from the curse of the Law and from religious bonds. You are already a child of God and you can confidently approach your Father whenever you want. You do not have to ask permission or seek an escort because you are heir, not slave. God bless you.
