Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
There is a detail that must be taken into account when we receive Jesus Christ in our hearts: we become part of the family of God. Knowing that God is the creator of all that exists and, therefore, the owner of the universe, being part of His family is an honorable privilege. Can there be anything better than being related to the Supreme Being? Now, we are members of the family of God; but not as distant cousins or nephews of a great-grandchild, we are His children! And as children, we are His first-degree heirs.
Let us see through Scripture what it means to be members of the family of God. First of all, it is important to know how we enter the family of God. John 1:12 says, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. Receiving Jesus Christ is the prerequisite for having the power, the right, and authorization to become children of God. It can be said that to receive Jesus Christ is our certificate of adoption as children of the Most High.
Romans 8:14-21 illustrates the meaning of being children of God, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Children tend to resemble their father and imitate their gestures, their voice and even their way of walking. Ephesians 5:1 says: Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. Imitation of our Heavenly Father should be an example to others. Philippians 2:15 says, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. And our Father has the right to discipline us, as Hebrews 12:7 says: If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
Finally, let’s look at what 1 John 3:1-2 says about the children of God: Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. What an honorable distinction to be part of the Almighty’s family! God bless you.
