Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’
Many people have a misconception about Jesus Christ and the gospel. Even some movements like the hippies and the new age have sold Jesus as the champion of peace and love. And although Isaiah had prophesied of Him to be called the Prince of Peace, His first coming was not precisely related to bringing union and peace, but quite the contrary. Two thousand years ago, Jesus came to earth to break schemes and, obviously, that would produce the opposition of many.
Everyone who has received Jesus in his heart has initially been rejected and isolated in the bosom of his own family. Whether our family has a Roman, Jewish, Muslim, or any other religious background, when we are first in the family we become born-again Christians, all other relatives will see us as extraterrestrial beings and we will not be welcome within family meetings. In less serious cases, no one will approach us, but in other cases, they will even prevent us from entering.
In order to understand why Jesus Christ is the cause of family division, we must first know who He is and what He came from. In John 14:6 we read, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Different religious beliefs have their own methods of trying to reach God. Each proclaims what it considers the truth and establishes the norms that govern the life of its faithful. Religious traditions come to take root among people to the point that they become the standard.
When Jesus says: I am the way, any other way will sow division. If in your family you have believed that heaven is reached through good works or by obeying a series of religious rules, definitively that when presenting Jesus as the way, this will unleash a great contradiction with the beliefs that we have received since childhood and Traditional religion. Jesus is not one way, He is the way, the only valid and true way, outside Him, nothing and nobody brings us to God.
Jesus is the truth, not a version or an opinion. The opposite of truth is false. If what we have believed in our family contradicts the words of the Lord, when we decide to believe Him while our relatives remain in the tradition, surely the least we will have is peace with them. There will be dissension between father and son, daughter and mother or daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. There will be a sword and they will consider us enemies instead of being part of their kin. It seems cruel, but it is reality and many have suffered it that way.
Only Jesus Christ brings us to the Father and gives us eternal life. As long as our families continue to believe what ancestral traditions tell them, it is impossible for us and them to have a union. Light does not coexist with darkness. The truth is on the opposite side of falsehood. The world has opinions that contradict the Word of God and who holds to the things that the world approves will treat us as his enemy, regardless of whether he has our own blood. Unity will come when we are all in the same feeling with Christ. God bless you.
