And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
Abraham is a very important person in the Bible. His transcendence is such that his name is mentioned in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. The Bible names Abraham as a friend of God, so being part of the lineage of God’s friend is a great distinction for anyone. Galatians 3:29 tells us that we who are Christ’s are truly also the offspring of Abraham and heirs according to the promise that God made to him. If God’s promise to Abraham is that he would be a great and blessed nation, let us rejoice because we are part of that.
A good part of the book of Genesis is dedicated to Abraham, from the 12th to the 25th chapter. There are two highlights in Abraham’s relationship with God: his faith and his obedience. On Abraham’s faith, Genesis 15: 6 says, And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. His obedience is highlighted in Genesis 22:18, In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. In his letter to the Romans, Paul mentions Abraham and defines him as the father of the faith, both for Jews and Gentiles.
If we are of the lineage of Abraham, our spiritual DNA must contain those two components that characterized him: faith and obedience. Faith is important to our salvation and justification, we are saved by grace, through faith. But we also need faith in our walk through life, we walk by faith, not by sight and, if we have been justified, as righteous, we live by faith. Faith is the key that opens us all doors because to the one who believes everything is possible. But more important than all this is that, with our faith, we please God.
As for obedience to God, let’s look at what it says in 1 Samuel 15:22, So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. Abraham gave the best demonstration of obedience to God when he was willing to sacrifice the child of the promise to obey God’s request.
If we are heirs of the promise of Abraham, it would be well to review what God promised and has fulfilled with his heirs according to the flesh and also with all who have been placed, by faith in Jesus Christ, as part of his spiritual descendant. All that promise can be summed up in what says Genesis 22:17-18, blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.
Abraham believed God and was counted for righteousness. Abraham obeyed God and received the promise that through his seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed. That promise has been fulfilled because through Jesus Christ, the seed of Abraham according to the flesh, every nation on earth has been blessed to have the opportunity to receive salvation and reconciliation with God. We carry Abraham’s lineage with us and it is time for us to prove it. Would you be willing to leave your native Ur of sin to go to the land of promise of eternal life? Would you be willing to sacrifice even your family for following Christ? God bless you.
