We Are not Children of the Slave

Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

Galatians 4:31

When we wait for the fulfillment of God’s promises, we sometimes despair and do things with the intention of “helping” God. That does not work, God is Almighty and our help is unnecessary. Abraham and Sarah had the promise of a son from God, since they were old and that son did not arrive, Sarah decided to make a help to God and suggested to her husband that he slept with her slave Hagar to obtain descent. Ishmael was born of the slave woman, but that is not the son of the promise. We Christians, being Abraham’s offspring, are not the slave’s children.

Making decisions ahead of God’s time can bring disastrous consequences that will have a long repercussion and its effects would affect many people. In the case of the decision of Sarah and Abraham to seek descent through the slave Hagar, we can say without fear of being mistaken that the whole humanity has been affected. Neither Sarah nor Abraham thought that a simple sexual act where a child was conceived would perch for centuries, to this day.

Who was Hagar? Hagar was a slave to Sarah, the wife of Abraham, who was from Egypt. Sarah and Abraham had gone to the land of Canaan, which is now Israel, coming from Ur of the Chaldeans, a territory that is now in Iraq. The fruit of the relationship between Abraham and the bondwoman Hagar was Ishmael. Of course Ishmael grew up, married and had children, and his children, in turn, had a large offspring. Are there descendants of Ishmael today? Of course, the Arab nations are direct descendants of the son of the slave Hagar.

As the promises of God are in Him yes and Amen, the son of promise, Isaac, came at the right time in which God was glorified. When Abraham’s manly potency had gone extinct and his wife Sarah had already reached menopause, only divine intervention could provoke a pregnancy. That’s how God works! He hopes that all human possibility has been exhausted so that there is no doubt that only His immense power will be able to act accordingly to do what is totally impossible for us.

Over time, the differences between the descendants of the son of the slave and the son of the free grew. Today, the children of Israel, who are children of Isaac, the son of the free, live in their promised land. However, around that Promised Land, the children of Ishmael, the son of the slave woman, live hostile against the children of the free. Both a people and the other can properly say that they are Abraham’s children; but only the children of the free can say that they are heirs of the promise.

From the conflict between the children of Abraham, Israelites and Ishmaelites, no one is alien. I have met Christians who have taken sides with the Arab-Palestinian cause rather than supporting the people of Israel. They say the Jews are evil, they killed Jesus and today they kill the poor defenseless Palestinians. I remind you that those poor and defenseless Palestinians were partying in Gaza when the twin towers fell in New York. Also the descendants of Ismael are the majority of the terrorists of the Islamic State. Let us therefore be on the right side, remember what Galatians 4:31 says: we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. God bless you.
