But you, brothers, are not in the dark, for this day to overtake you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-5
What is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 is something that every Christian should have in mind. In its context, this biblical passage is part of what Paul explains to the church in Thessalonica regarding the second coming of the Lord. But that applies to all of us who believe in Christ. We are children of light, not children of darkness and we must walk through this world according to what we are. Also, it is extremely important to be prepared for when our Lord comes. We are in the world, but we cannot live as the world wants.
We are not in darkness because we have believed in Jesus Christ and we have Him, the light of the world. John 8:12 says, Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” And it confirms it in John 12:46, I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. Having already Christ, believing in Him, following Him, we have left behind sin, we have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and now we are part of the Kingdom of Light.
Having accepted Jesus Christ in our hearts, we have also come out of darkness because our eyes have been opened and now we have the knowledge of the truth that has set us free. In 2 Corinthians 4:6 we read, For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. Now we know where we have taken God and where he has led us.
As soon as the coming of the Lord does not surprise us, 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 is confirmed by what Romans 13:12 says, The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. That day is closer and closer, the children of light must walk in the light and be prepared, discarding that world of darkness in which we live before and now only focus on satisfying the will of the one who saved us from eternal punishment.
Therefore, let us do what Ephesians 5:8-13 says, which is explained only, For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.
Let us act as what we are, as children of light. We do not have to follow the current of a world lost and enslaved by the tyranny of the evil one. Let us raise our heads and use the weapons of light, the two-edged sword that is the Word of God. Let us always remember who we are, as 1 Peter 2:9 says, But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Let us not be afraid of rejection for bringing the word of light and calling it to things as the Bible says. We have the support of our Father. God bless you.
